The room was smaller than the last, though much like the last, a pale light glowed, giving everything a strange sort of energy. I looked around at Coldan, before pausing at Shae. The other Jahor remained in the main room, and though I was somewhat concerned about leaving them behind with the others, we needed answers. We had been summoned here.
Reldar sat upon a chair that seemed made of the roots of trees, protruding from the ground. It had taken me a while to realize that the entirety of this place seemed to be the inside of a tree. It was an enormous tree, and nothing like any that I had ever encountered before.
Reldar watched me, a question in his eyes. âWhat makes you believe the isâanish are responsible as you claim?â
âI have seen it,â I said.
âWhat have you seen, Volatar?â
âI am no longer the Volatar,â I said.
Reldar chuckled. âYou would decline the title that you so willingly claimed before?â
I could feel Coldan tense. It was strange. I had always been aware of Coldanâs emotions before, but never quite like this. It was almost as if the connection he now shared to the elaron, which bound him more tightly to it, also bound him more tightly to me.
Why should that be the case? Could it be because I had been the one who had bonded him to the elaron?
âI am something other than the protector of the Jahor,â I said.
âAnd yet you still seek to protect the Jahor.â
âIâm not sure that I can do that the way I had before using the elaron and the neârash.â
âYou believe the great powers take sides?â
I smiled. âI believe the great powers belong to certain people.â
âThe great powers belong to the world, not to any particular people.â He waved his hands, and there came a swirling of elaron. It drifted out from him, heading toward the walls, working its way up the ceiling that arched overhead. This one wasnât constructed of the branches of multiple trees. As far as I could tell, this seemed to be made of a single tree. âOnce you learn to master the great powers, they can be taught to any.â
âYou have control over both the elaron and the neârash?â
His face wrinkled in a frown. âI would not touch that one,â he said.
âThen you canât speak to what can be mastered.â
Reldar smiled at me. âI have often wondered what it might be like for me to visit with the human known as the Volatar. Do you know that we have enjoyed the stories of your exploits?â
âYou have enjoyed them?â Coldan leaned forward, his voice a low growl.
âHow could we not? The Volatar sought to protect his people. He sought to unite them. For those like us, such a thing is useful.â
âWhat has happened to the dwulâran that separated your people?â
Reldar watched me. âYou donât know.â
I shrugged. âI wouldnât have asked if I did.â
âI only thoughtâ¦â He forced a smile. There was something strange about the expression on his face, much like there was something strange to his musically accented words.
